New Project for the Minor League Rocker!

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

So, Hung Dynasty is still going strong. But I met some great people, and we decided to take on a side project. The singer, Holly, shares my enthusiasm for female-fronted, symphonic Euro-metal. She’s also in another band. The drummer, Robert, plays for Psychedelic Mooj. Bassist Nicolas is in a band called Midlife Crisis.

Anyway, this project is called Luminatus. It’s a cover band honoring bands like Nightwish and The Gathering – you know, those that don’t get much attention here in the States. Anyway, here’s a video clip of a rehearsal.

We’re playing our first gig together at UB’s in Mesa Jan. 2 at 7:30. That’s at Dobson and Broadway. Should be a really good time!

4 Essential Movies for Rock Fans

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

I was just having a think about some great movies about rock music. I mean stuff that’s fun to watch repeatedly. I came up with a few and thought some of you should see them, if you have’t already.

They are, in no particular order:

Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey – This is my favorite metal movie ever. Even though it’s mostly about black metal, it’s a fascinating genre study. And some of the self-importance and posturing is hysterical. It’s also pretty odd to see Ronnie James Dio (NOT a black metal musician) with a collection of ceramic frogs.

Decline of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years – This is a must. These 80s bands … were they confident or just merely delusional? And what makes someone wear leather pants with the buttocks cut out? And is there anything stranger than seeing Ozzy Osbourne carry on an intelligible conversation while cooking scrambled eggs?

This is Spinal Tap – I could write volumes about this story of a 70s megaband in its death throes (or would that be more metal as “deth throws” with an umlaut or two?). It makes people laugh at the ludicrous situations. It makes musicians cry because it’s too true to life. It also has an all-star cast. It only gets better with repeat viewing.

Anvil! The Movie – This is a thoroughly entertaining and even moving story about two guys and a rotating cast of band members. They had their moment in the early 80s, and watched their peers go on to bigger and better. And they want to get to those plateaus, too. And being in their 50s isn’t gonna stop them. I’ve heard rumors this was edited out-of-sequence for dramatic effect. That tarnishes it, if true, but it’s still fun.

Am I missing any good ones? Rock Star does so NOT count!

Fun with Heavy Metal Band Name Origins

A photo of Iceland's Dimmuborgir by Mike Schiraldi.

My wife and I are researching a trip to Iceland. I’ve been pouring over Web sites and books, and I ran across this fun tidbit …

There’s an area of spectacular lava flows there. The Iceland name for it translates into “Dark Castle.” That phrase, my friends, is dimmuborgir, from which the black metal band Dimmu Borgir takes its name.

That moves them a notch up in my esteem for creative band names. But I still can’t stand their vocals. Nuh, uh.

Tone Tuesday!

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Welcome to Tone Tuesday, a new feature here at MinorLeagueRocker.com! Every Tuesday, I’m going to offer some advice or just get on my soapbox about what I consider good guitar tone. Today, I’m going to talk about how to EQ your amp.

These days, metal guitarists want to sound HEAVY. That means they usually crank the gain and the bass knob, and turn the mids way down. In your bedroom, this will sound cool. It will sound like thousands of Tony Iommis churning out molten riffs in the caldera of an active volcano.

Onstage, with a bassist and possibly another guitarist, this will sound like honey-roasted poop chute. Sorry, old bean, but there it is.

I love gain. Distortion makes me swoon. Heaviness … I live for it. But there’s a better way to do it. Ease off the gain just a touch, and you’ll hear greater definition come back into your playing. If you use triads, you’ll hear each individual note come through better.

Now, let’s talk about that Bass control. Don’t crank that up. If you do that, your tone will blend in with the bassist. Your frequencies will blend together and produce a spongey mess. Ease back on that Bass knob, and look for the one labeled “Mid.” Those Mid frequencies will help you cut through the mix, and will separate your tone from the bassist’s. I know a lot of guitarists think lots of bass + scooped mids = HEAVY. But the low end is your bassist’s job. I promise your band will sound better if you use these frequencies wisely.

Now let’s say you have two guitars in your band … you guys need to work together. Consider the type of wood in your guitars, the distortion character of your amps, the output of your pickups. Do your best to occupy difference frequencies in the spectrum. In Hung Dynasty, Todd uses a mahogany guitar through a dark-sounding Mesa F-100 (a wonderful amp, by the way). I use a swamp ash guitar through a brighter-sounding Fryette Deliverance 60. He sets his guitar up to have a little less middle-end, where I boost mine quite a bit. Neither of us pile on the low frequencies, because that’s where Chris the Bassist lives. I also dial in a touch more top end.

The result? We sound like three distinct instrument with their own characters. My leads punch through the mix nicely. The bass and the rhythm guitar synch perfectly. And when we all play the same riff in unison? Oh, it’s a pants-shrinking eargasm. I can’t wait to record with our current gear. It’s gonna sound beautiful!

So, to some up: Don’t scoop your mids. Be smart with the bass frequency. And you might, just might, have a tiny bit too much gain. This might sound weird, but you should aim to make your guitar and amp sound good with the band, rather than good by itself.

Tribute to the Gods Recap

Monday, December 14th, 2009

We had kind of an unusual show Friday night – it was a night of all cover tunes as part of the Tribute to the Gods II show. Well, we snuck two originals into the mix.

It was also our first time playing that venue (Goathead Saloon in Mesa). It was a really good sound system, which is always a plus. Pretty nicely kept up, and a very friendly staff. We really liked playing there – Lara, the promoter, also did a nice job. Good bands, good venue and the trains ran on time. That’s always good!

As for the covers … well, we kind of had to rush to get enough covers ready for a full set that would all fit together. That made for some less-than-precise execution on our part. Sometimes, that’s kind of unavoidable when you’re low on rehearsal time and you need to fill space. On the other hand, we barged our way through the early hiccups and finished very solid. And I think we were pretty entertaining. One thing Hung Dynasty has in spades is a very solid chemistry and a shared enjoyment for the music we play. I am convinced that shows onstage.

And here’s a special salute to the guys from AZ/DZ, Arizona’s AC/DC tribute band: They were all sorts of fun. See ‘em when you get a chance!

A Musical Pet Peeve

Friday, December 4th, 2009

I have this really funny musical pet peeve. When I’m at a gig and I see other guitarists who don’t trim the ends of their strings, it drive me crazy. There’s something about a frazzle of metallic spaghetti whipping around a guitar’s headstock that screams “I AM A BUSH-LEAGUE AMATEUR” to me.

I’m not one of those guys who breaks into tears if his guitar gets dirty. I’ve pumped enough of my own sweat over my guitars to double the size of the Dead Sea. I’ve had unruly music fans knock mic stands into my guitars. That’s all okay. But there’s nothing worse than seeing careless maintenance.

That’s because if you’re sloppy in your maintenance, you’re probably sloppy about your playing. And it probably means that you don’t really love the instrument. I absolutely love playing the guitar, and getting to do it in front of audiences. They deserve better than indifference if they’re paying a cover, or even just wandering in for free to spend some time watching me play.

So, do the right thing: When you change your strings, clip the unneeded lengths. You might think you might look punk, but really, you just look like a punk. See the difference?

We’re Paying Tribute to the Gods!

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Next weekend, Hung Dynasty is going to be up to something unusual – we’re pitching in to hail the hairy heros we grew up with at the Tribute to the Gods II show. We’ve put together a full set of covers from our musical influences – Judas Prist, Metallica, Black Sabbath and the like.

I’m really looking forward to hearing the other bands, too – especially Anthem, the Rush tribute band. I’m pretty certain they have a practice space in our building, because I often hear a really solid bunch of Rush covers in the hallways. AZ/DZ, the AC/DC tribute, should also be a lot of fun. It’ll also be cool to hear what Axe Attack sounds like.

We’ve never done an all-cover set before, so this will be pretty unusual for us. But fun. I will miss our usual tunes, though. We wrote that stuff for a reason – ’cause we love it!

Anyway, the show’s at Goathead Saloon, 1423 S. Country Club in Mesa, on Dec. 11. $10! We’re on third. The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10!

A New Band Member for Hung Dynasty

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

There’s something I alluded to in that earlier video post – but let me spell it out for you now:

Hung Dynasty has a new bassist. And it is none other than Chris Burns, who is a longtime fan, fill-in bassist and general mensch. I am certain he is the final piece of our Hung Dynasty puzzle. He is bursting with songwriting ideas, and has a wheelbarrow full of rock enthusiasm. His rig also sounds amazing, which is a huge plus.

I’m hoping we can help revive Chris’ own band, Dorks in Space, for a few gigs, too. His wife was in the band with him, and it would be a shame to leave her out of the fun.

Chris has already brought us a tune that is 90 percent there. We just need to put our heads together to tighten the bolts. It’s very classic metal, and shows he’s been listening to a lot of Judas Priest lately – though the lyrics remind me more of Rage for Order-era Queensryche. Which is a damn fine thing, in my opinion.

Anyway, be sure to welcome Chris the next time you see Hung Dynasty!
