Back at the Conservatory

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

Friday night, Hung Dynasty hit the studio again. Once again, we were at the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences in Gilbert, Ariz. This time, Mike Gray was the man at the controls. He did a really nice job of getting some sweet sounds out of our rigs.

As for what we recorded – well, we’ve had a power ballad kicking around for awhile, so we did that. We also did a cover. Can’t tell you which one yet. We really want to get some licensing for this one and get it on the air, actually. Should be fun!

Sample the Sound – Conservatory of Recording Arts

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Remember that recording session back at the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences a few months ago? Here’s another unmastered sample from that session. That was such a good time. It’s a beautiful campus, and the more motivated of the student/engineers are truly top-flight … and getting their money’s worth, clearly.

A Sneak Peak from our Latest Recording

I’ve talked about Hung Dynasty a lot, but now you can check out a preview from the latest recording.

One Week Without Practice Makes One Weak

Monday, June 1st, 2009

Ah, the beautiful sound of a cranked tube amp is again ringing in my ears!

Todd returned from his trip, and we were hard at work again. Mostly, we worked on refining some newer original tunes along with a few covers. I also introduced the dudes to some new riffs I’ve been kicking around.

It was a pretty upbeat practice, with everyone pretty amped (get it? haw!) about the recording sessions at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences. Not all was perfect, but we’re happy we got to record anything at all. That it was with a cool bunch of people in a room full of awesome gear was just icing on the cake.

Of course, just getting to play our tunes at rehearsal is always a lot of fun for me. I get to try out a few new things to see how they might improve the song, and I simply love the sound of my Univalve working its little tube-based heart out. And it’s good to hang out with the guys. There’s a lot of unspoken communication, even during songs. Most of it is wry humor, but there’s also a lot of commentary about making a mistake, doing something cool or just a funny accident. It’s amazing what a raised eyebrow or tilt of a head can convey between musicians who know each other well.

We’re also pretty excited about gigs coming up at The Badlands Music Venue in Mesa. We’ve never played there, and it’s always really fun to play at a new place.

Good-bye, New Friends

Before I get to today’s story – see that button over on the right side of the page? The one that says “Subscribe”? You should hit it. Really, it’s good!

About a month ago, I answered a Craigslist posting for some recording students that were seeking a band. The first of them, Cher, practiced her live recording techniques on us at the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences. It was our first time at the Gilbert campus, and it was incredible – beautiful building, great gear. Everything on the live sound stage put to shame all the stuff we’ve played through at every single local venue. Seriously, they should think about getting touring acts!

Joe, the guy running the monitors that night, had us back a few weeks later for his 10th-cycle recording project. We

knocked off four songs, which was probably two too many, between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m. It was a blast – Joe and his crew knew their stuff, and the gear was again incredible.

That night, we got to know Joe and his classmates well – I can only remember Manny’s name, for some reason – but there was another I’ll call Angry Dragon (no reflection on his demeanor – he’s, in fact, hysterically funny).

Unfortunately, they’re all graduating from the conservatory this week and will be off to Nashville. Cher will also be done in a few weeks.

It’s too bad there’s not enough of a recording scene here to keep some of these people around. I definitely enjoyed seeing them at work and getting to know them.

Cher, Joe, Manny, Angry Dragon – good luck to you all!
