Disecting Dio’s Lyrics – There’s Nothing There!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Once again, I could count on Stash from Dorks in Space for perspective. After our gig, he began setting me straight about lyrics.

STASH – Like a tiger/you can see his stripes/but you know he’s clean?! What does that even mean? All Ronnie James Dio did was write stuff that would sound cool over awesome riffs! You need to shut off your filter.

ME – Yeah, but I’ve been listening to Queensryche since I was a kid.

STASH – Well, there’s your problem right there.

I genuinely enjoy hanging out with that guy. Really, I am going to try giving that filter a bit of a rest.

Riffs a-plenty, but my lyrics are gone

Monday, May 18th, 2009

When I’m not rockin’ with the band, I’m a corporate wordslinger and freelance writer. I wish that meant I could whip out lyrics all day. But something about using rhyme and meter eludes me – I’ve only written the lyrics to two of our songs. Prose? I can do it all day.

This drives me crazy, because I churn out riffs, licks and chord progressions like crazy. And Todd can only produce lyrics so fast.

I think part of it is that I’m undisciplined. It’s way easier to pick up the guitar, fire up an amp and come up with some new riffs. Also, since I make a living with words, it’s often hard for me to try something that sounds cheesy. Which lyrics -even good ones- often do to my ear.

Today, it’s gonna be different. I’m not touching the guitar until I at least have a working verse for this one tune I’ve wanted to write for a long time.
